The Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier
1. How would you describe Jacob Walter's style of writing? Remember that this is a diary. Is this the sort of way that you would write a diary?
A. I think that his style of writing is more literal and more to the point. Not as poetic as writers from the 1700s. I think that this was interesting to read.
2. What is a worry that Jacob shares? What about his setting (physical, temporal, historical) makes this worry unique> Can you feel/see the human-ness in this worry?
A. He is worried about surviving, and I mean why wouldn't he be? It's the 1700s, in Russia, in the winter, he's staving, of course he would be worried and scared. You can tell that the events and the steps to his path, are extremely challenging and hard enduring.
3. What is a hardship that Jacob endures> Provide a quote (first three words, last word, page number?. What stood out to you as interesting or difficult concerning this hardship? Could you imagine yourself responding in the same way or differently?'
A. Jacob is worried about surviving. If I was in his place, I would feel the exact same way, because surviving is everything. There's barely any food to eat, it's freezing cold, and there are 500,000 other men like him. How would you feel?
4. What does Jacob reveal about the human need or camaraderie? How does the violence and constant movement of the war influence what camaraderie looks like here?
A. Since there's a war, and people are just trying to do anything to survive, it's very hard to build trust with someone without being betrayed. I think that Jacob was a fairly respectable and kind person, until he realized that, he wouldn't be able to survive like this. He needed to keep his valuables to himself, even sleep while being attached to his horse!
