IHSS Blog: Role models
One Theme I noticed within Alexie’s Superman and Me Essay was the importance of Role Models. Both with Alexies personal Role Model and the one he played for others. From the very start of the reading it's told that Superman was the reason Alexie learned how to read. Some Role Models within life will be ones that you will follow for the rest of your life, while others like the one in his essay would just be a small door that will open the gateway for a much larger role in one's life. In the paragraph where he explains how he looks at panels within the superman comic and just starts trying to learn it's that spark of determination as he later puts it will be the start of Alexie trying to save his life. Trying to take what he has from the environment he was placed in and break and exceed the expectations placed upon him by society, trying to break free of what life told him he would and become more proving to himself and others that it's possible. Near the ending of the Essay it's explained he became an Novelist and how it wasn’t his first goal in life but it was definitely an option that became possible all from that very first spark from the Superman Comic. Alexie himself becomes a role model through his own books and writing projects for other kids that are living a similar life as he was at their age. It explains how those children's eyes lit up at his presence, meaning he was making an impact on their lives. He was encouraging them to get involved in activities that saved his path and trying to get the message through that reading had the possibility of saving all of their lives.
