Native American Reading response

In the readings we read in class I found two common topics among them. The first one would be religion. During the colonization of Native Americans, the Catholic religion was forced upon them. Due to this, their later oral tellings of stories were affected by this religion. One example is in the Iroquois Creation Story. The making of man is heavily similar to the making of man in the catholic church. in Samson Occom's "Sermon Preached at Execution of Moses Paul" he talks about how God leads the way in life. How life is supposed to be cherished and how God "is a living God, he is all life, the fountain of life; and a sinner is a dead soul; there is nothing but death in him." With that being said, another theme I found was the value of life and their land.  They believed that their land was given to them to respect and take care of. Their land did not only have value to them but also was home to their own people.  In Sherman Alexie's Superman and Me, he talks about his life on the Spokane Indian Reservation and his experiences while growing up. Sherman recognizes his ability to read, to people living in regular homes in the U.S., reading is not something people focus on. It's not something people would point out or praise you on. In Sherman's case, reading was not only something he enjoyed doing, but also, in a way, saved his life. When he grew up he was fully able to read and took in the profession as a writer. It gave him a life outside of the reservation. Something I took away from these readings is that life is very important. Life is like a plant. It needs water to grow. You learn new things, you develop your own opinions, you follow a religion, and you make your own choices. All of these things are like the water to your plant. And slowly, life expands and you get new opportunities to achieve your own goals.
