Mary Catherine Bateson
Mary Catherine Bateson is the daughter of Margaret Mead the famous culture anthropologist. Mary Catherine also carried the title of cultural anthropologist holding plenty of books and studies behind her own name that kept her out from the shadows of her mother. Sadly Mary Catherine passed away at the age of 81 this year on January 2, 2021. Bateson was the daughter of two anthropologists that met during field work in New Guinea. Both of her parents were very intent on catching her childhood on film, these recordings would serve a purpose later on in life. Both Dr. Mead and her husband Dr. Bateson would use them for study work. The two used it to break down their daughters' behavioral instincts. Bateson contributed her own fair to cultural anthropology. Widely known as the author of the composing a life. A book about the cultural significance women face from the environment placed upon them. This book pulled from Bateson's own experience and four of her friends she studied and observed for a part of their lives. Topics revolving around culture anthropology and linguistics played a large role in the narrative. She wrote another book called “Peripheral Vision: Learning Along the way.” Published in 1995. This story traveled through four different locations, Iran, The Philippines, Israel, and the United States. She takes from all the places she had lived in, her life and had gotten to experience the culture from. Writing a reflective piece surrounding aspects of anthropology by comparing her own experiences of education and the education of what other cultures call learning. Trying to answer the question of could be called a traditional education if it varies from around the world.
