Cultural Anthropology Blog: Franz Boas
Franz Boas was a German America Anthropologist. He is largely considered the father of anthropology and pioneered multiple anthropological disciplines the most famous being cultural relativism. Cultural relativism is the idea that cultural differences are not due to racial differences but to historical events and environmental differences.
In addition to pioneering cultural relativism, he also published numerous books and lectures. The most famous being The Mind of Primitive Man which challenged the current consensus on racial differences. As a result, the book was used by many to oppose race-based immigration policy in the United States.
